Mate (Pilot)

There are three methods for getting an endorsement as Mate (Pilot) of Towing vessels defined in 46CFR11.465.

  • The first is based on qualifying experience.

30-months of total qualifying experience that includes 12-months as Apprentice Mate (steersman) of Towing while holding an endorsement as Apprentice Mate AND 3-months of training and assessment on a route while completing the TOAR.

  • The second method is based on holding an endorsement as Mate of Inspected vessels.

If you hold an endorsement as Mate higher than 200 tons (meaning 500 tons or higher) of Inspected vessels and have 30-days of training and assessment on the route while completing the TOAR you can operate a towing vessel within the limitations of the endorsement.

  • The third method is based on experience while holding an endorsement as Master.

If you hold an endorsement as Master less than 200 tons for Inspected vessels and have 3-years experience operating vessels under the authority of the endorsement (meaning 3-years as Master operating an inspected vessel that required an endorsement as Master) and have completed 30-days of training and assessment on a route while completing the TOAR; and have completed the exam for Apprentice Mate (steersman) you will be issued an endorsement as Mate (Pilot) of Towing vessels.
