Master and Mate of Fishing Vessel Information
A Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) National Officer endorsed as Master or Mate of Fishing Industry Vessels is required to serve as Captain or Mate on board fishing industry vessels greater than 200 tons. Fishing Industry Vessel means any vessel engaged in the harvest, processing, or transportation of fish or fish products; this includes catcher boats, processors, tenders
Master and Mate of Fishing (46 CFR 11.462)
Endorsements as Master (captain) and Mate of Fishing Vessels are issued with tonnage limitations of from 500 to 5000 tons based on the qualifying experience of the applicant and with either a Near Coastal or Oceans route depending on the exams or courses completed. Fishing industry vessels are exempt from STCW regulations (46 CFR 11.202).
Master of Fishing authorizes the authority to be the captain on any fishing industry vessel within the limitations on the endorsement. The sea service requirements for Master of Fishing is a minimum of four years that includes:
- At least two years on ocean waters.
- At least one year as master, mate or operator on vessels greater than 50 tons while holding a license as master, mate, or OUPV.
Mate of Fishing authorizes the authority to be the Officer in Charge of a Watch or second captain on any fishing industry vessel within the limitations on the endorsement. The sea
service experience required for Mate of Fishing is a minimum of three years of experience that includes:
- At least 18 months on near coastal or ocean waters.
- At least one year must have been on vessels greater than 50 tons.
