Columbia Pacific Maritime is a family operated school of mariners helping mariners meet their professional deck license goals since 2006.
Our mission is to provide frequently scheduled professional training classes for mariners seeking Merchant Mariner Credential National Deck Endorsements.
To meet this mission statement, with the exception of a few holidays and the Pacific NW Sportsman’s Show, we offer the following classes at least twice a month on a seven-day a week schedule.
- Captain Classes: OUPV and Master 100 or 200 tons.
- Radar Classes: Radar Observer (Unlimited), ARPA, Radar Recertification.
- Tugboat Captain: Apprentice Mate (Steersman) of Towing Vessels.
- Able Seaman (AB)
- License Refresher (Renewal) and upgrade classes for all types of license upgrades.
- License Prep for licenses requiring testing at the Regional Exam Center (REC).
Our Mariner Family
Our family roots date back to a tugboat captain who operated on the Coos and Umpqua Rivers between 1945 and 1976, and a commercial fisherman who fished off California, Oregon, and Washington between 1965 and 1986.
All instruction is provided by second and third-generation mariners with combined professional experience on fishing, towing, and research vessels sailing waters that span the entire west coast from Mexico to the Artic with trips to Hawaii and through the Panama Canal and beyond.
Our School History
Dennis Degner founded the school in 2006 after 14-years of teaching US Coast Guard approved maritime classes in the community college system. It started in the basement of his home as a way to supplement his retirement. Because of the demand for the classes taught, the school was moved in 2016 to a larger facility and his son, John Degner joined the team.
The school is the focal point of my life, it represents the sum of my life’s experiences, and the reason for my existence.
