How Much is Needed

The fastest way to advance in the maritime industry is to apply for an endorsement as soon as you meet the requirements for that endorsement. The following are benchmarks MMC endorsements from zero through 4-years of experience.

No experience or less than 180 days

  • Ordinary Seaman (OS).

180 days (6-months) or more experience

  • Able Seaman (AB) Fishing or Offshore Supply Vessel (OSV).
  • Mate 200 tons or less inland (tonnage limitations apply).

360 days (12-months) or more experience

  • Able Seaman (AB) Special.
  • Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel (OUPV); If 90-days of this service was on ocean waters the mariner will receive a near coastal route, otherwise the license will be limited to inland waters.
  • Mate 200 ton or less near coastal; Must include 180 days on ocean waters (tonnage limitations apply).
  • Master 100 ton or less inland (tonnage limitations apply).
  • Master 200 ton or less inland; Must include 180 days as master or mate while holding an endorsement as master, mate or OUPV (tonnage limitations apply).

540 days (18-months) or more experience

  • Able Seaman (AB) Limited; All of this experience must be on oceans and on vessels greater than 100 tons.
  • Apprentice Mate (steersman) of Towing vessels; Must include 12 months on towing vessels.

720 days (24-months) or more experience

  • Master 100 ton or less near coastal; Must include 12 months on oceans (tonnage limitations apply).
  • Master 200 ton or less near coastal; Must include 12 months on oceans and 12 months as master or mate while holding an endorsement as master, mate or OUPV (tonnage limitations apply).
  • Mate 500 ton; Must include 12 months on vessels greater than 50 tons and 3 months as AB on vessels greater than 50 tons while holding an endorsement as AB. Must include 12 months on oceans for a near coastal route.

900 days (30-months) or more experience

  • Mate of Towing; Must include 12 months as Apprentice Mate (steersman).

1080 days (36 months) or more experience

  • Able Seaman Unlimited; All of this experience must be on oceans.
  • Master 200 tons or less oceans; Must include 18 months on oceans and 24 months as master or mate while holding an endorsement as master, mate or OUPV (tonnage limitations apply).
  • Mate Fishing Industry Vessels; >Must include 18 months on oceans and 12 months on vessels greater than 50 tons.

1440 days (48 months) or more experience

  • Master of Towing; Must include 18 months as Mate of Towing.
  • Master Fishing Industry Vessels; Must include 24 months on oceans, 24 months on vessels greater than 50 tons and 12 months as master or mate while holding an endorsement as master, mate or OUPV.

Tonnage Limitations for Master and Mate 200 tons or less

Endorsements as master and mate 200 tons and less are issued in 50 ton increments, rounding up, using the following formula:

  • The endorsement is limited to the maximum tonnage on which at least 25 percent of the required experience was obtained;
  • or 150 percent of the maximum tonnage on which at least 50 percent of the service was obtained, whichever is higher.
  • If all the experience was on vessel less than 5 tons the endorsement will be limited to 25 tons.
