Fishing Vessel Captain

fvMaster or Mate of Fishing Industry Vessel are licenses required by the USCG to operate commercial fishing industry vessels 200 GRT and greater. These licenses are issued with tonnage limitations of from 500 to 5,000 GRT. Fishing industry vessels less than 200 GRT are not required to be operated a mariner holding a professional license, but there may be some benefits for the operator to do so.

Master of Fishing Vessels requires 1440-days (4-years) experience on deck that includes 720-days on ocean waters, and 360-days as master on vessels greater than 50 GRT while holding a license as master or mate. This license is issued with tonnage limitations of 500 to 5,000 tons depending on the qualifying experience of the applicant.

Mate of Fishing Vessels requires 1080-days (3-years) experience on deck that includes 540-days on ocean waters and 360-days on vessels greater than 50 GRT. This license is issued with tonnage limitations of 500 to 5,000-tons depending on the qualifying experience of the applicant.

Master 200-ton requires 720-days experience on deck that includes 360-days on ocean waters, AND 360-days as master or mate while holding a license as master or mate, AND either 360-days on vessels greater than 67 GRT, or 180-days on vessels greater than 100 GRT.

Mate 200-ton requires 360-days experience on deck that includes 180-days on ocean waters. This license is issued with tonnage limitations of 25, 50, 100 or 200-ton depending on the qualifying experience of the applicant.

Master 100-ton requires 720-days experience on deck that includes 360-days on ocean waters. This license is issued with tonnage limitations of 25, 50, or 100-ton depending on the qualifying experience of the applicant.

  • Master/Mate of Fishing vessel 500 to 5,000-ton is 16-days and $2,350.
  • Master/Mate 200-ton is 14-days and $1,900.
  • Master 100-ton is 10-days and $1,250.
