Columbia Pacific Maritime offers a three-class sequence that will satisfy the exam requirements for Apprentice Mate (Steersman) of Towing. The Apprentice Mate endorsement one of three paths identified in 46 CFR 11.465 to the Mate (Pilot) of Towing Vessels. The total cost of this sequence is $2,000, plus $100 for the workbooks. A mariner may jump into the sequence at any point that they meet the prerequisite for the upgrade class.
- The first class in the sequence is the 10-day Master 100 ton class. This class builds the foundation of knowledge and skills that is needed in the upgrade classes.
- The second class in the sequence is the 4-day Master or Mate 100 to 200 ton upgrade class. If the mariner holds a Master 100 ton or less endorsement they can start the sequence with this class.
- The final class is the 2-day Apprentice Mate (Steersman) upgrade. If the mariner holds a Master 200 ton endorsement, or has completed the 200 ton exam requirements within one year than they simply complete this upgrade class.
To qualify as Mate of Towing the mariner must complete 360 days (240 12-hour days) of experience on towing vessels while holding the Apprentice Mate (Steersman) endorsement, and a TOAR for that route. For more information on the professional requirements for towing vessels please visit my website.
