Requirements for Mate 500 tons

The Mate 500 ton license is issued with either an Inland, Near Coastal, or an Oceans route. For an officer endorsement with a tonnage limitation greater than 200 tons (meaning 500 ton or greater) the applicant must meet the following requirements (46 CFR 11.401):

  1. Completion of an approved Firefighting course (meaning Advanced Firefighting)
  2. Completion of an approved Radar Observer course
  3. Hold an endorsement as Able Seaman

The sea service requirements for Mate 500 ton Inland is two-years that includes one-year on vessels over 50 tons AND 90-days as AB on vessels over 50 tons while holding an AB (46 CFR 11.488).

The sea service requirements for Mate 500 ton Near Coastal is two-years (at least one-year must be on ocean waters) that includes one-year on vessels over 50 tons AND 90-days as AB on vessels over 50 tons while holding an AB (46 CFR 11.421).

Licenses for Inland only routes are not subject to STCW regulations; licenses of more than 200 GRT (meaning 500 tons or more) with Near Coastal or Ocean routes are subject to STCW regulations (46 CFR 11.202). The STCW requirements for OICNW (Officer In Charge of a Navigational Watch) for vessel of more than 200 GRT may be satisfied through either completion of an approved course (about $30,000 and five-months) OR completion of the STCW assessments on a seagoing vessel (click here for more information on OICNW).
